Colley bids for first rally win |
Tomorrow’s (Saturday) Trade Distribution Stages Rally is the penultimate
round of the Eurocars Motorsport Manx Rally Championship, and in the
absence of Mark and Eunice Cubbon, other crews have a chance to grab the
limelight.
Principle among them is Steve Colley, who probably starts as favourite
for the 12-stage off-road event. Steve has never won a rally outright
(though he was once denied only by a jump start penalty), and with
co-driver Liz Humphreys has been champing at the bitt to fit another
rally into his hectic schedule ever since a brilliant third overall on
the Jaks Rally at the start of the year on their first run in the car.
They will lead the 25-car field into action from St Johns at
8.45am tomorrow morning, with the event covering four runs each at Glion
Gill off the Brandywell Road, and South Barrule and Archallgan
plantations.

Cubbon's win again - but only just |
Mark
and Eunice Cubbon kept up their 100% winning record in this years
Eurocars Motorsport Manx Rally Championship on Saturday’s Duke Stages
Rally - but only just!
The Mitsubishi Evo 7 crew built up an early lead of 20 seconds over the
morning’s eight tests on Jurby Airfield and closed roads around Andreas,
with George Collister and Janet Craine (Evo 3) forming the main
opposition.
Mark admitted he was pushing on the airfield and controlling the pace on
the roads, so it was no surprise that he extended the advantage over two
further airfield tests at lunchtime. With half a minute in hand he then
backed off on the final six stages at the Garey Ford road near Glen
Trammon, and the Hibernia.

Cubbon's look to move closer to title |
|
Eurocars Motorsport Manx Rally Championship leaders Mark
and Eunice Cubbon will look to move to within striking distance of a
maiden title when the series resumes after a three month break for
Saturday’s Duke Stages Rally.
The husband and wife team have won all three rounds so far this year in
their Mitsubishi Evo 7, across closed roads, plantation and airfield,
and will start as ready favourites despite a very strong line up among
the near capacity entry of 42 crews. That certainly vindicates Druidale
Motor Club’s decision to move their flagship event onto closed roads for
the first time.
George Collister and Janet Craine (Evo 3), winners of the event the last
time it ran in 2006, will lead the rally into action from the former
parade ground at Jurby just before 9am. The Cubbon’s start behind and a
sign of their commitment to the Championship was the fact that they
opted to miss Rally Isle of Man in order to save the car.

Cubbon's cruise to hat-trick |
|
Onchan
husband and wife team Mark and Eunice Cubbon scored a dominant victory
on Saturday’s Riverside Furniture Jurby Stages Rally on the Isle of Man.
The pair
set the fastest time on ten of the twelve airfield stages in their
Mitsubishi Evo 7, finishing with a 28 second victory margin, despite
easing off late in the day.
The
result means that they extend their lead at the top of the Eurocars
Motorsport Manx Rally Championship, having won each of the first three
rounds. It is the first time a hat-trick of successive round wins has
been achieved in recent times.

Post Round 3 Championship Standings now available |
Following the weekends Riverside Furniture Stages held at
Jurby Airfield, Mark and Eunice Cubbon have extended there lead in the
Eurocars Motorsport Manx Rally Championship to 6 points over the
reigning champions Richard Curphey and Andrew Holmes.
Despite a hat trick of wins the pressure is by no means of the husband
and wife team and as well as the 2007 champions there are a number of
other crews who still have a score in hand over those ahead of them.

Cubbon's aim for hat-trick |
Husband and wife team Mark and Eunice Cubbon aim to extend their lead in the Eurocars Motorsport Manx Rally Championship on this Saturday's third round, the Riverside Furniture Jurby Stages.
In the process the Mitsubishi Evo 7 crew will also look to complete the first hat-trick of successive club rally wins in recent history, and put to bed any ill-feeling after Mark lost last years event over an hour after the finish, when the results were dramatically altered with cone penalties amended.
Victory on both the rounds so far has given the Cubbon's a five point advantage in the standings over reigning champions Richard Curphey and Andrew Holmes.

Cubbon's Double Top |
|
Husband and wife team Mark and Eunice Cubbon made it two wins from two
rounds to extend their lead in the Eurocars Motorsport Manx Rally
Championship, claiming a comfortable victory on Saturday’s Black Horse
Finance Easter Stages.
Driving a Mitsubishi Evo 7 for the first time on gravel, the pair were
initially headed by George Collister and Janet Craine (Evo 3) on the
opening two tests at Conrhenny plantation near Onchan.
Collister opened a five second lead despite an overshoot on the first of
them that cost as much as ten seconds, while Cubbon was adapting to
gravel and felt he was too relaxed.
Donny Gill/Steve Gurney (Evo 2) held third despite an overshoot
themselves, two seconds up on the leading two-wheel drive, reigning
champions Richard Curphey/Andrew Holmes (Nova). They too had been
slightly delayed when the wipers failed.

Collister hopes for triumphant Easter return |
|
The longest standing local club rally, Manx Auto Sports’ Easter Stages, sponsored by Black Horse Finance, returns to its traditional Easter date for the first time in several years, and has attracted a good entry of 32 crews.
Last years winners Richard Curphey and Andrew Holmes, the reigning Eurocars Motorsport Manx Rally champions, will lead the field into action tomorrow morning (Saturday) in their Vauxhall Nova, though it is likely to be the all-wheel drive cars that challenge for victory this time.
They are headed by George Collister and Janet Craine. The pair are returning to action for the first time since the incident on last November’s closed road event that all but destroyed their Mistubishi. George has subsequently completely re-built the car. He will therefore be hungry for success, and as a former winner starts as favourite for the ten stage event.
Chief opposition is likely to come from Mark and Eunice Cubbon, who will take their Evo 7 off-road for the first time. They come into the event fresh from a maiden rally win on last months Jaks Bar Stages, which put them to the top of the championship standings, with an advantage they’ll seek to extend.

Cubbon's turn Jakes to Aces |
Mark Cubbon scored his first ever rally win in sensational style on Saturday as the Jaks Bar Asphalt Stages Rally came down to an afternoon shoot-out through the streets of Peel.
Driving a Mitsubishi Evo 7 with Eunice Cubbon, Mark started the day's ten stages just six seconds down on John Cope and Rob Fagg. The Subaru Impreza WRC pair went about extending that from the off at The Lhen in the north of the island despite overnight rain leaving slippery conditions.
They took ten seconds out of the Cubbon's, who admitted they had been too cautious after a sideways moment on only the third corner. In fact they surrendered second place to Steve Quine and Paul McCann (Vauxhall Astra).

Cope leads, but Manx Challenge is fighting |
Regular
visitor John Cope is living up to his 'favourite' tag, leading the Jaks
Bar Asphalt Stages Rally after the opening nights action, and set to
lead the way as rallying comes to Peel for the first time this
afternoon.
It's close though; Cope and Manx co-driver Rob Fagg have their Subaru
Impreza WRC just six seconds ahead of Mark and Eunice Cubbon (Mitsubishi
Evo 7), with Steve Quine and Paul McCann (Vauxhall Astra) only another
three back in third.
In fact Cope found himself down in fourth place after what he described
as a 'scraggy' run on the opening stage of the evening at Snuff the
Wind, with the Cubbon's taking an early lead ahead of visitor Daniel
Harper (BMW Mini) and trials ace Steve Colley (Evo 6), who had cost a
couple of seconds by having the flying finish marked in the wrong place
on his notes. Quine meanwhile was also on the pace despite his lamp-pod
slipping off the bonnet.

Cope set to lead record entry for Peel invasion |
Regular visitor John Cope is the hot favourite to take victory on this weekend’s opening closed roads rally of the year, the Jaks Bar Stages Rally, which is headlined by an all-new town centre stage in Peel on Saturday afternoon.
The Lancashire driver is bidding for a first victory on Manx tarmac with his Subaru Impreza WRC, and to claim what would be a first win for off-island drivers in the near 15 year history of club closed roads events.
Cope and his local co-driver Rob Fagg, top a record entry of 63 crews in the absence of dominant local ace Rob Watson, to whom they finished as runner-up last year after a terrific scrap on the closing tests. Since then they have also finished second on the demanding Tour of Mull.
Their major local challenge is set to come from a battery of Mitsubishi’s, although it is dented by the late withdrawal of George Collister on Tuesday.
